Anesthesiologists
Acadia Medical Arts Anesthesia anesthesiologists are doctors who specialize in administering anesthesia. All of our anesthesiologists are board-certified. In addition to our anesthesiologists, a nurse anesthetist may attend you. A nurse anesthetist is a registered nurse who has completed additional training in administering anesthesia and is certified by national examination.
Prior to your procedure you will meet with one of our anesthesiologists. The anesthesiologist will review your medical history and evaluate your current condition. The different types of anesthesia will be discussed with you to help you make an informed decision about your care. At this time you will be able to discuss your concerns and get answers to any questions you may have.
Types of Anesthesia:
General
Anesthesia medications are administered through an intravenous line to produce an unconscious state, which will be maintained throughout your procedure. After you are asleep a breathing tube will be inserted. At no time will you be aware of your surroundings.
Local, with Sedation
Your surgeon will inject a local anesthetic to numb the surgical site. In addition, medication will be given to you through your intravenous line to keep you comfortable. The anesthesiologist will monitor your vital signs and administer sedative medication via your intravenous line to keep you comfortable. Levels of consciousness can vary (from wide awake to asleep), depending on your preference.
Blocks
The anesthesiologist injects local anesthesia that temporarily causes the nerves to fall asleep and numbs the surgical site. The effects of the local anesthetic wear off after several hours. You may also have sedative medication administered through your intravenous line.
Regional (Spinal)
The anesthesiologist injects local anesthesia into your back. This temporarily causes the nerves to fall asleep and numbs the surgical site. The effects of the local anesthetic wear off after several hours. You may also choose to have sedative medication administered through your intravenous line.
